The Scud humbucker pickup set was designed to work well in a variety of tonal applications, boasting excellent performance in a multitude of playing styles. Plainly put, blues and blues-rock - all the way on up to heavy metal (especially the more classic side of heavy metal) are now at the ready when this set is installed. If a versatile playing style where guitars need to fit in the mix in multiple genres, make this set a consideration.
Hotter than a normal PAF-style humbucker, the bridge has enough drive to push the front end of lower wattage tube combos for a sweet crunchy tone but also allows for plenty of headroom in high-gain rigs. It has a respectable mid-range response with a slightly cushioned bottom end and a clear wailing high-end. There is no shortage of sustain in this set, thanks to the use of alnico magnets.
The neck has a "PAF" character but is on the warmer side of things in terms of output to blend vintage sweetness with modern clarity while eliminating some of the muddiness and washy sounds associated with lower output pickups in modern settings.
For those that find this set appealing but are left wondering about the saturation factor, or just plain want more edge and gravel in the signal chain, the optional alnico 8 magnet is a gem to be found here.
